Legacy Need Not Divide Jeter and the Yankees Empty

On the other side of the table, let Jeter be reminded how many times he parroted Joe Torre and forecast Yankee fortunes by saying, “It all comes down to pitching.” Let him contemplate what those outcomes would have been without the Steinbrenners’ purchasing power, which allowed him to nationally showcase the intangibles he is so rightfully proud of and to rake in endorsement millions.

If the legacy of Gehrig isn’t enough, there is always another Yankee all-timer to learn from.

Joe DiMaggio never played in an era of free agency, never made $189 million over 10 years and was by many accounts bitter over every dollar that eluded him. Unlike Gehrig, Joe D never struck people as a guy who believed he was lucky despite his famous expression, “I want to thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee,” which later hung on a sign in the tunnel of the old stadium leading to the Yankees’ dugout.
